Crew Member Reveals Mental Health Struggle After Deluge of Online Abuse After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also carried high-profile passengers.

The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and conducted tests during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her studies and astronaut training to the historic significance of her roots – was drowned out under the tide of sexist vitriol.

She is best known for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she reports that the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the supporters whose support pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She noted that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had resulted from the mission, including increased focus on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
