The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
