Learners Push Back Over AI-Led Higher Education Module: "We Could Have Simply Used ChatGPT"

Several learners at a UK university voiced strong dissatisfaction after realizing their career-focused module was predominantly presented via AI.

New Path Hopes Diminished

James and another participant were among over forty participants who enrolled in a coding program expecting to transition into cybersecurity through a publicly-supported training scheme.

But their expectations were soon reduced when they experienced automated presentations being delivered by an AI voiceover.

When we submitted assignments that was produced artificially, we would be kicked out from the institution,” stated James during a documented confrontation with his instructor.

Repeated Complaints and University Answer

Students multiple times brought up worries about the computer-generated resources, yet the institution looks to have persisted using computer-created content.

Notably, the institution has rigorous guidelines controlling student use of AI, stating that submitting automated work constitutes academic misconduct.

Expanding Phenomenon in Higher Education

The case echoes a larger pattern across colleges increasingly employing AI tools for teaching, resource development, and customized evaluation.

  • Modern research show nearly a quarter of UK educators now use AI in their instruction practices
  • Government reports have celebrated generative AI's ability to revolutionize education
  • However many students find the experience demoralizing rather than transformative

Revealing Evidence of AI Generation

Students detected various indicators pointing to AI-generated resources:

  1. Mixed language usage between US and British English
  2. Suspicious file names
  3. Surface-level information with occasional mentions to unrelated US regulations
  4. Voiceover suddenly switching to a Spanish accent before returning

Student Frustration and Future Anxieties

James voiced deep anxiety about his career prospects, stating he felt “stuck with this course” after dedicating two years.

Another participant, going through a professional transition, stated he had selected the course for substantive knowledge rather than only a certification.

“Sitting there with material that is just unworthy of someone's time,” he said, “when you could be using that time actually participating in something worthwhile, is genuinely frustrating.”

Regardless of university statements about maintaining academic standards, students felt the concluding addition of real teachers was “too little, too late” to fix their fundamental concerns.
